Ronald Long

Legal Adviser
On January 7, 1983, my life took a drastic turn when I was wrongly accused of "capital murder" and other serious crimes in Atlantic City. I found myself unjustly imprisoned for the next 37 years in the New Jersey State prison system, including a harrowing 5-year stint on death row—maintaining my innocence throughout.   During my time behind bars, I honed my legal acumen and became renowned as one of the most skilled Jailhouse Lawyers in the New Jersey Department of Corrections. A significant milestone in my journey was the landmark case of Ronald Long v. Howard Beyer (676 F. Supp. 75, D.N.J. 1988), where I pioneered the Legal Access process that transformed the prison system's legal landscape. I crafted hundreds of legal briefs and successfully overturned numerous criminal convictions, some of which are well-documented, including cases like State of New Jersey v. Vincent Briggs (279 N.J. Super 555, App. Div. 1995) and State of New Jersey v. James Damon (286 N.J. Super. 492, App. Div. 1996).   Yet, my most significant triumphs often remain unreported, where I contributed to the reversal of murder convictions for individuals like Michael Howard, Sheena Perry, Ulysses Rivers, Horace Branch, Anthony Norman, Michael Dizley, Anthony Ways, and Sean Washington. Vincent Briggs and Blaine Holmes, both murder convictions, are notable success stories I contributed to as well.   Before my capital murder trial in March 1984, the jury selection process faced an unexpected challenge as there weren't enough prospective jurors due to the opening of the Trump Casino. Seizing the opportunity, I challenged the racially biased jury selection system, leading to a landmark victory for justice (State of New Jersey v. Ronald Long, 198 N.J. Super. 32, App. Div. 1984). My actions inspired others to join the fight against injustice, culminating in the shutdown of the courthouse on the two-year anniversary of my arrest (January 7, 1985) and the overhaul of Atlantic County's jury selection procedures (State of New Jersey v. Ronald Long, 204 N.J. Super. 469, Law Div. 1985).   After five years on death row, the New Jersey Supreme Court granted me a new trial in State of New Jersey v. Ronald Long (119 N.J. 434, 1990). This fresh start promised a trial devoid of racial bias and other prejudicial elements that marred my initial proceedings. Unfortunately, I never got that opportunity due to a complex series of events.   Throughout my 37 years of incarceration, I tirelessly fought for justice through legal advocacy. Armed with a modest IBM computer and a 9-dot matrix pin printer, I authored and self-published "Jersey Jailhouse Lawyer," my first book within the New Jersey prison pipeline.   Today, I reside in Abington Township, Pennsylvania, alongside my beloved wife, Tamar Israel. My commitment to unraveling intricate legal dilemmas remains steadfast, as I continue to assist individuals primarily in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
